Your favorite EQ server - a serious poll and reflection

All of these are pre-ldon to make it simple.

Why I voted how I did:

Rallos Zek was a server I couldn't really get into after playing on Sullon, there was a definite difference in the attitudes of people. I like Sullons Good vs. Evil thing because it did take alot of senseless killing out of the game (Now seen on Zek b/c of leaderboard) and gave people of your type a common goal. Protect the lowbies when they're levelling up so they can be fighting at your side the next day. Zonewide battles, uber exp bonus, truly holding and controlling a zone, raids where you needed more than just strategy (like RZtW when someone roots your kiters). Cloth armor til level 50... it truly was NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORKNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORKNOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOORK place to be.

    It was just fun ^_~

The poll is a bit unfair because SZ was really good up to LDoN, but then went to shit a bit (I guess the same could be said of RZ with augments).

I think this poll will turn into a survey of which server people played on.

I think it can be agreed both servers were more fun in the early days.

RZ had roleplaying - dark unity, the chaos of Freeport, trolls and blueberry elves teaming up, gnomes versus greater faydark, dwarves minding their own business, which inspired the devs so much that they hard-coded TZ and VZ to try and emulate what the players did on their own.

Gean and I left RZ right when it started to be a no-drop fest, and got in on the early days of Sullon with zone control maps, point boards, tunare bracers, good vs evil roleplay, along with every asshole that had ever played EQ. Seriously, I've never seen a game more full of the filth and scum of the internet, and they were attracted to SZ due to "no rules." Killing them made you feel like you were really doing something for the good of society.

I liked any new brand new server for like a week or so...

Nothing made me happier than 60 nekkid trolls all trying to KS tadpoles from each other. I think I hit the opening of 3 or so bluebie servers, and of course sullon. Always got bored after a few weeks though.

I was a barbarian when SZ came out because evil team was dum... but it just wasn't the same. They should have let trolls be on the good team NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORKNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORKNOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOORK.

Voted for Sullon. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the early Rallos days. I just got in on Sullon when it began, and dabbled on Rallos after that. But by then, it was pretty much all people in no-drop and the rest of the gear was stuff no one cared about losing, which took a little of the fun out of it.

And I also enjoy tormenting lower lvls anyway. Hence, why I like WoW.

I think this is because people played on the server they liked =D

but yeah i agree that sullon went downhill when people could start leveling away from the pvp on the good team =*(. That was when the people you were leveling with were not necessarily there to be in a CONSTANT pvp environment.

They only wanted it when they started it, not when it came to them =(.

though i feel the incredible jump in gear (edit) and xping speeds(/edit) with luclin that was starting to also screw the game up then.

I was the same way. I did not get in on early rallos, I was introduced to EQ by a friend who was in some crappy uberguild on Terris thule, then they got a good number of their friends to go to sullon. They also talked me into starting eq with them on sullon in it's early days. To be honest, until a year or so ago I had never even tried to play a blue server seriously. At first I kissing hated it, this asshole rogue would kill me over and over and over again. He was like lvl 60 and had an "epic" (whatever the hell one of those is). After participating in a few of the orc lift zergs to clear an evil, it became entirely more enjoyable. Nothing motivates you like 40 newbie woodelves raiding some lvl 60 rogue or wizard(ogod he's casting back away BACK AWAY). And i'm serious we had at least 40 people in some of those rushes. after a while we moved to the siren camp in oot, then the sisters in lfay(kiss you equestrielle) (standard goodie fare that i never would have found had it not been for my powergamer irl friends) by then i was lvl 20 and excited to move into castle MM. I honestly do not think that any other server has seriously leveled there in almost any range. When you tell people who were from blue servers that they would probably be leveling there to around 20-30/35 they would almost pee their pants in horror. Keep in mind that most goodies were wearing drt's or cloth and hoping to get some chain/rawhide in castle MM too. Some even had magic weapons that could hurt the gargoyles.
All in all it was the gear i think that made sullon so much fun, at one time i was going to give all my gear to emoteen(then demilune a shaman) and die to port back to my bind and accidently gave it to a monster instead. I almost cried. It took me like 2 horrible hours to get passable newbie gear again. 2 hours seemed like so much at that time. Now it's a joke. None of this twinked to hell stuff you see everywhere (including my alts) now. Not that sullon would be like that if it was brought back, not after like a week anyways. Though PC would be fun for that week.

God i miss it so much.

I hope vanguard gets the whole slow leveling and poor gear thing like original eq right, i will almost cry with happenis if they have a sullon-like server.

I liked to steal from people. RZ. Also I think I had too much invested in RZ and would probably not have moved to SZ even when it was popular and everyone wasnt hacking.

Never Played Either when they started...just got back into eq cause i played on BluE Brell, which was boring as hell and PvP was fun when i first started, but it was more of a challenge to level even thought i had little levelage on brell.

I wanted to play the server with the PK 1 item loot type thingy it sounds insanly fun. + OMG GEAN IS PANSY?

i played sz and never engaged some equal or lower level than me for the sole fact that
a - they had 50 friends rdy to gank me
    or
b - they had level 50 friends rdy to gank me

in the end most of my battles were against people my level and much higher, the most epic being a group of 50's chasing me and Syoji down into kaesora where they got lost and ended up all dying except the war who survived with like 50% who we then proceeded to gank. We were both level 30...unfortunately he ignored me and killed syoji but its okay cuz i finished him and rezzed syoji sup owned. Camped their corpses but they just got a nec to summon lame~~

The above is an example of what made SZ so great.

You had a server full of teenage trash who could barely play their way out of a paper bag. The skilled players (in the time frame mentioned) could really take on people much higher, and with much better gear.

In the 200-2002 time I think that SZ was without a doubt the better server. Rallos had better times before (and questionably after), but in that small time period SZ reigned supreme.

On RZ you had a few group vs group battles, but be honest, most fights were PK's ganking a lone Anti. On SZ you often had zonewide battles with multiple people all gunning for eachother. You had shifting alliances and everyone was involved in every fight. No level restrictions meant that everybody got a peice of the fun, even if their opponent was 5 levels higher.

The good/newt GFay war at the server's start, the nuet/evil war in velious, and the massive Newt+Good vs Evils fight in feerot were all events that RZ never got close to experiencing. The fight in feerot had over 220 people participating, it was large scale EQ PvP at it's finest (and laggiest).

The bottom line is that both servers were awesome, but within the confines of the question SZ was better.

I always thought that the most interesting part of the sz dynamic was that Sony didn’t “assign” zones to each team in the way that Blizzard did with WoW. As a neutral high elf I started out in the fays and from level 1 to 6 got constant “you are so dead when you hit level 6” threats. At 5.9 I knew instinctively that my own kind had to be out there somewhere. I took the zone connection map and the deity list and figured out that misty would have the highest likelihood of having neurals in it so I went there, and was right! Suddenly I was surrounded by friendly people helping me level and inviting me to feeder guilds.

As a neutral we were told by our peers that at a certain point we had to go to Velious to level, and there always did seem to be a much higher ratio of us there. Misty and Velious felt more like a home because of this. Somehow Sony chose the gods, races and starting cities and the rest happened naturally. This may have been more dynamic than I am aware of because I only played for one year, post PoK. Along the same lines 2/3 of the lower level game content would end up as just another zone I invised through to get somewhere else, whereas on RZ, I’m assuming you had much more freedom.

Im the only one who voted Tallon ^^

Rallos was fun but i dint have money
Sullon was funner butt i never got very high and was ganked by 60's

I like Tallon because it had good range, not so much risk if you werent rich, and, like Sullon, had the teams. I had fun doing stuff like Wazu

sullon was basically carebear pvp.. it drained the fun out of it ... if you died what would you lose? what would you gain? Nothing.. maybe a corpse run and a few silver...

on rallos zek you could stalk people, kill them, and steal their items, resulting in crying.. possible suicides.. and lulz. PVP range between 4 levels was good and fair..

sullon is just for exp grinders and raiders.

Essay incoming on my EQ PvP Career (Most of It)

It all started out on rallos zek where my first pk of a "Bracelet of might" (W/e the +15 str +6 to all resists was) Due to an "Exploit" of finding someone sitting in a corner, sitting my Ogre ass on top of them and having my shammy buddy permablind them. My ganking career had only just begun! Journeying all the way to Gfay with nothing but "Mild" Ganks of cloth and silver I came across an unbelievable spectacle.

A twink, one like I'd never seen before, CLEARLY Unkillable stood in front of me. Ikky breastplate, Hp like none I Had ever seen Bragging about his Ultimate power. There ran a rogue, A guild tag that I had never herd of "Horsemen of Doom" suddenly ambushed the almighty warrior.

A jousting session ensued, one like I had never seen where the rogue seemed to "poof and appear" managing to backstab as he ran by. Such skill and swordplay like none I had ever seen came from this nameless rogue. His backstabs nearing 20% of this "Unbeatable" twink. The twink was at 40% Health while this rogue was at almost 80. An event then followed that I would never forget...

The twink turned around and began to run, His helmet gone missing, his hp dropping to 35%, his legs went missing, 30%... I thought to myself, this rogue will surely miss his golden opportunity! Suddenly the rogue said
"Ahh, I feel much better now!"
"Ahh, I feel much better now!"
"Ahh, I feel much better now!"
"Ahh, I feel much better now!"
The Unstoppable warrior dropped before I had a chance to blink. The rogue Walked to the corpse, and the twink's breastplate went missing.
    "WHAT WAS THAT?!" I asked.
"Oh, you mean my arms?" he replied, as he walked away.

I was determined to find out how and what he just did. At first I concluded it was hacks, Surely there was not someway to instantly kill someone. I tried looking up everything, Lifetaps, spells, skills, items... Anything that could possibly contribute to this.

I decided to add Carribian, this rogue with skill that surpassed my imagination to my friends list. I knew only one thing, he was level 18 at the time, and the pvp cap was 4 levels.

While journeying through CB A few days later, I tried to grasp my mind around what had happened less than three days ago. I encountered another twink, level 14 Just as unkillable. I checked my friends list, sure enough, Carribian was on, anonymous. I sent him a tell "Level 14 twink rogue at CB, Ikky bp as well as others"
    he replied "Otw, thank you"
Within minutes the twink was dead, the same familiar
"Ahh, I feel much better now!" when he was at around 20%
A guild invite and the secrets of the Ivy hoop were revealed to me on that day.

At this time, all of the links to ivyhoop did not include the 6 charges of lifetap. Nor was the origin of giving red diamonds to a random troll for the reward known.

After gank and gank on my sk, getting possibly close to a million plat over the course of the years I played, my name was Known to all who came to Paludal Caverns.
My alts, not nearly as geared as Crushs was.. were still just as strong, Sympothy my wizard, level 14 ganked numerous thousands of plat. Maximilies, my rogue gaining even more. Lulwin, my bard partner helped gank outdoors, my level 15 Beastmaster, Fighting "Red" twinks, hooping them to 5% and then letting the pet nuke them for the looting rights.

Epic disarms, forcing items into their mouse so that they were lootable, and of corse, exploiting the bazaar weight limitless in order to port people away and gank them. My ganks were endless, money flooded in. Only when items became augmentable was when the server died for me... no more loot, no more point to wearing no drop... no more point to gank... Worthless Server in the end

This is what lead me to Sullon Zek....
