    Comp Troubles Help~

Got up yesterday and turned on my computer onto to find it didn't really start: monitor didn't go on, no processing sounds, corded mouse's laser (my remote one was recharging) didn't turn on- thought my comp was dead either from fried HD (happened to the first HD I had with this comp) or fried video card.

Tried starting it afew more times with no luck. Then I thought it might have been a conflict with the windows update I left it apply before it shutdown when I went to bed the day before.

Notified my mom about it, she got pissed because I had Dled a bunch of shows she wanted to watch. That turned into a talk about costs of replacing the HD or vid card or just getting a new comp and then into me explaining the what the function of said devices did in the computer.

She left, I began checking the inside out to see if there was any damage, found none and tried turning the computer on again- it worked.

Puzzles I began checking things out to see if anyting was kissed up, randomly started movies and shows all worked. The only thing odd was that the comp had 1.69 GB free, all my moms shows had reduce it to 78mb the day before.

I then grabbed a meal and was about to sit down to try other programs out when I began to have discomfort in my chest. That led to a trip to emerg, nothing wrong, the doctor didn't know wtf caused what I had and chalked it up to really weird acid reflux (like really bad tightness and non-burning pain in my chest with difficulty breathing would be caused by that).

By the time I got home it was morning, my mom wanted to watch a show before she went to bed so I started the comp up again. It worked, but checking HD space, I found it now had 2.6GBs free.

Anyway I'm tired and am about to goto bed. Anyone got any ideas on what caused this? I'm assuming the extra space thing was an auto function where the comp started compressing unused files to free things up.

    Anyway see ya tomorrow.

Just shows like the Dog Whisperer.

She knows nothing about computers. The only time she's ever used it on her own was when she was watching shows and I wanted to goto bed early. She got me up several times because she forgot how to enlargen the video screen, what keys would rewind or FF a show, pressed a wrong button and the video player stoped working. She had a really hard time double clicking fast enough to start a show and only got marginally better over time.

Since then she won't watch a show without me running things.

    Sounds like a UE. :3

But really, the HD space is probably something silly like virtual memory or windows being retarded.

The not turning on could be a thousand things. I had a problem with my computer where I restarted it and when it booted back up the resolution was stuck at like 400X300. It ended up being the fan on an extra vid card cooler I had being clogged. Now I have to let my comp cool down for a few minutes when I restart =[

It's a lot of trial and error if you're fixing it yourself. Good luck!

    It works fine now.

I only have very basic skills in dealing with comp problems, never encountered a UE before like this. The highlight my my comp problems was when my vid cards fan stopped working and the thing overheated while I was playing WoW years ago. That was easy to deduce as the fan went from making a load grinding noise for a few weeks to no sound at all right before the problem hit.

I got the name icepacks like 3 years ago when I panic'ed during a WoW raid because my video card was overheating. I ran to the kitchen, grabbed an icepack, and wraped it in one paper towel and put it on top of my video card.

It worked fine for about 10 minutes, then my computer shut down again for 'some reason'. I looked at the icepack and it had melted through it and the goo was all over the card and the card had bent the socket so I had to get a whole new mobo AND vid card.

    Hahaha

I have to say my reaction of alot saner: I just grabbed a room fan, laid it on its side facing it into the tower and turned it on max.

It's still fulfilling that function 3 years later, getting a new card fan was too much of a hassel (Nvidia card that uses a rare type of Radion fan) and money was tight. Now I want a new computer so the issues moot.

BTW I came to realize I only need it for games released after '04 and have found games actually run smoother with the room fan than they did with the vid fan.

90% of the time when the motherboard won't power up at all you have a fried PS or a short. Hard drive space has nothing to do with the ability to provide power to your motherboard. You can start a computer up without any HD at all and there won't be an issue (of course it won't magically boot into windows but you will see your POST and BIOS).

From your description the safe bet is that there is an intermittent short somewhere in your system. If it happens again take everything out and just leave the power supply hooked into the MB with your video card, CPU and RAM. If it doesn't power up then, take everything out of the case and place the MOBO on some cardboard, hooked up to the Power Supply. If that works you should look in your case for some loose metal filings or other potential shorting material.

If it wont' power up on it's own even with nothing but the CPU and the PS attached outside of the case, you either blew your MB or your power supply. Grab a voltmeter and find out which.

    Same thing happened again today.

Oy, I'll have to take it in somewhere because I have no idea on how to do any of that. The most I've done is put in/take out RAM and the Vid card. If it's a short, does that mean I replace some wires or the entire power supply?

Peeked around in the case without taking anything out and found no metal filings or anything beyond a bit of dust here and there.

Will continued use of the comp without fixing this problem cause anything really bad to happen? Should I turn the comp off ASAP until this is fixed or once it's on nothing bad will happen?

I'm gonna get in touch with Marv and see if he'll help me build a new comp.

    Thanks Ranc and everyone else!

Edit: looking trhough NCIX, yeesh I didn't know HDs had gotten this big!: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...e&promoid=1006
