my first memory of the flowers is actually from a friend: he was leveling one day in Black Burrow and he said the place got trashed, and some of the people doing the pking were in a guild called "
Flowers of Happiness." We both laughed (conversation was over the phone) and thought being killed by someone with such a tag was pretty ironic and humiliating, like getting pk'd by a erudite paladin.
He was playing a gnome wizzard, and I was playing a barbarian shaman. I remember dreading running into BB because the tunnel in part of it was so black and human vision was horrible that one day I spent like a couple hours just running around in pitch black part of the tunnel. Sometimes the gama trick worked and I could get in and out fine, but other times for some reason the gama wouldn't change.
We had recently come back to EQ from UO and man I hated EQ so much. I was level 12 for a very long time. We both leveled up to 16 and 17 I think and did the Oasis PK track. We later rerolled (sometime after velious maybe, I remember the twinks running around with lamentations and ikky bps and mithril staves and Guardian armor) as a gnome necro and an assling druid, again just to PK in Oasis. There were by no means an abundance of twinks at this point, maybe like 2 or 3 tops that had that kinda gear in Oasis.
Me and my friend never had much time to level up or twink out, and our method for "making cash" was usually abusing the hell out of the stein of mogguk quest, but we could'nt endure it too much because of all the god awful running involved. Man I hated that shit about eq, the boats and running and constant waiting detracted from the early part of the game so much for me. Pking was never that profitable for us (some times we would luck out and get like 50pp or some random piece of armor, but when most of the people you killed were just as poor as you, it wasn't the best way to "make cash." We never PK'd for loot though, we just loved to kill people). On my barbarian shaman PK all I ran around in was a damn cloth or leather cap just for the obnoxious polar bear hat effect. I think I had some spear that someone gave to me that I was always so excited to see hit someone for like 12 or 24 damage. For my druid I was able to get the glowing wooden crook and man I loved that staff, loved the contrast of an assling with a giant LotResque staff.
It was on my n00 dr00d that I think I got invited into FoH for the first time by Nallian's Ogre. I just remember him saying "lets take back da beech" and I remember referrencing the jokes about "phat_lewtz/phat l00tz" which I knew to be de rigeur among the FoH circle at the time. We ran up and down the shore and I think I attacked and killed some people and then he invited me. I think shortly after he got jumped by a bunch of Ogres (Shreik is the only name that I recall) and I cant remember the outcome...think he died.
A bit later in my EQ career I rolled a half elf bard called Requiiem and joined FoH for like a week, and then joined Legion of Legends. After being in hohoho (heh) for a few weeks I quit EQ again for a while and after that moved to tallon zek because I had a friend there and I was tired of running around as a naked caster or a bard with the no drop guk armor and a SSoY. Both me and my friend left RZ, but not before we FINALLY killed Naffwin, this little assling warrior with guardian, lammys, wurmslayer, mithril staff, high mr (ie 75) that used to just murder the shit outa us. Our necro druid team finally brought him down in just our naked asses casting spells, he didnt even get to pull the ring.
Rallos was a badass server to grow up playing on because it was the hardest server, you learned all the tricks (funny how people become pretty resourceful when items are on the line) and were exposed to all sorts of opportunistic bastards. I remeber my early PK career on tallon, my ranger was called Erectus Organgrinder and I got to level 20 and would camp out in HPH which was a popular "lighty" leveling spot, where lots of gnomes and humans would go from about 14-20. I would wait till there was a massive spawn of orcs and the group pulled, train the rest of the orcs on the group, and then just cut all the people to shreds while they were sending tells "omg wtf thats not fair." heh, the added bonus was when people would notice me and run around shouting "GET ERECTUS!!1" I pulled that cheap shit for so long that other players started petitioning to get my last name changed. Of course the GMs were all to happy to change it =/ I actually stole the last name from Melvyn, a bard I always thought was at least an interesting character on RZ. Too, when I would finally get worn down and killed by the_angered_mob_of_HPH I would always be able to pull a ring and man that would piss them off -- they had just never been exposed to that kind of tactic before. I had a lot of fun with mojo sticks at the expense of the lowbies on tz, too.
I enjoy the FoH playstyle these days, mainly though because I think I'm jaded as shit. I PK'd in Diablo 1, UO, and lastly EQ and by that time the whole noble paladin vs. evil dread lord shit had just worn off on me. I think also because the mens rea of (the real)FoH involves a sort of Nietzscheian tight rope walker mentality that I have come to identify with these days: you can _jump_ on a tight rope and not lose your balance and laugh as your peers (who take games too seriously) lose their balance and fall off.
Anyways, sorry for the digressions and general nostalgia, and 30 page thesis here heh. omg tl;dr!
Oh, and how can there be an EQ FoH memory thread without CRUSADER ZOG!! "I am constant as the North Star."
Man, players just don't come like that anymore.
