Survivorman (the best show ever) is back in 2012!

Just in time for my other favorite thing, planetside! My best memories of planetside 1 was watching Survivorman and sniping people. Can't believe in 2012 I'll be able to watch entirely new episodes while playing a brand new game!!!

Also les ha this sweet movie called "off the grid" that shows his families move from the city to off the grid. He did another show on how to survive In hurricane Katrina type situations that was ok but didnt have the soul of Suvivorman(tm).

Another Fun Les Stroud Fact(tm): he produces and plays the music for the show himself! The intro is my favorite song of his, but there's a lot of cool ones throughout the show. He even releases albums that are really good. He played with the Northern Pikes for a while.

My favorite thing about Survivorman(tm) is that it's the amalgamation of Les's entire life. He studied to be a film maker and ended up being a nature/survival guide and musician. Now he has complete creative control of a show that he can pour his music, filming and survival skills into and it's kissing awesome.

He films the entire show himself often taking several trips back to get cameras for every shot you see during the show.

Truly an awesome show. Even though it is a Canadian show (good ones can be rare!), I remember finding out about this show from an episode of The Office where they did a pretty funny of a parody of it. The unique music really does give the show its own original sort of ambiance.

He also had a show year or two ago called "Beyond Survival" which was wuite a bit different than survivor man had a much more cultural sort of feel to it.

Just finished that first episode, so good! I hope he doesn't die

I'd love to see the Katrina episode... how does he do that? Makes me think that I should put a few more things into my earthquake survival kit.

Why the hell do so many people have a problem with Bear Grylls? People don't watch his show for survival tips, they watch it to see what gruesome, horrible things he'll do next.

Bear Grylls served in the SAS. He climbed Everest when he was 23. Just look at all the insane and incredible things he has done on his wikipedia page:

he led a team of five, including his childhood friend, SAS colleague, and Mount Everest climbing partner Mick Crosthwaite, on the first unassisted crossing of the north Atlantic Arctic Ocean, in an open rigid inflatable boat. Suffering weeks of frozen spray and icebergs, battling force 8 gale winds, hypothermia, and storms in an eleven-metre-long boat through some of the most treacherous stretches of water in the world including the Labrador Sea, the Denmark Strait, and the stretch made famous by The Perfect Storm, Grylls and his team were just barely able to finish the journey from Halifax, Nova Scotia to John o' Groats, Scotland.
He Paramotored next to Everest until he could look (and film) down on its peak. Paramotoring is where you take an enormous fan, strap it to your back and turn it on whilst holding a gliding type thing. He got frostbite in the -60 degree celsius temperatures.

He is an actual adventurer who does crazy things all over the world most humans aren't capable of. Yes, his show kind of sucked, but whenever I watched it he always made it completely clear he wasn't actually staying/sleeping in the locations he was filming in. He always made it clear he was just giving survival tips - which somehow always involved him crawling into a dead animal or eating something revolting.

I don't blame him for making a show like that being as he was probably paid a lot of money to do so.

Thanks for recommending Survivorman. It's a fun thing for me to watch at work. I always feel so sorry for the guy! What a shitty job. Getting dropped in the most remote parts of the world and having to live like a tramp for a week whilst carrying a shitload of equipment around.

I like them both but Les Stroud has the better show. As for who is the "better" survivor, they're both alive so I dunno!
But I do know that Les Stroud almost died on his show during the Arctic episode (Got lost and was a day late for his pickup when some random dude picked him up with a dog sled... turned out he had been heading the wrong way with zero supplies).

He's a really nice guy! IRL he lives in a houseboat in the middle of nowhere.

I've watched a few more episodes of Survivorman now and it is entertaining to watch the ordeals Les puts himself through. He's good at making shelters and good at starting fires, but he's really crap at foraging/hunting food. He basically eats nothing for the 7 days he's stranded.

I just watched that episode today! He sets of saying he's a 2 day walk from the nearest town, but after 2 days is still in the middle of nowhere when he meets the Inuit who saved him. He never mentions he was walking the wrong way, he just said everytime he passed a glacier or rock he assumed the town would be there.

i like bear grylls except the part where he lied about the entire concept of his show and the part where eats random shit that doesn't do anything for survival and would most likely get you sick.

he should be a contestant on fear factor instead

Stroud 'eats nothing' for the 7 days he's stranded because he actually is stranded and doesn't have some intern to bring along the snake butthole or whatever absurd thing he will eat for shock value ratings. They're two completely different shows - one is basically fear factor mixed with Survivor the reality show and the other is an awesome dude filming the entire thing (that actually happened and isn't some contrived script), writing the music for it and producing the show. The things he does eat are usually a centerpiece of the show because it would be challenging for you to catch a rabbit in the frigid north with your dick and an oil can.

Maybe the version of the show you get is very different to the one we get. American's usually have to put up with more edited versions of shows. Everytime I've watched Bear he's always said very clearly during the show that he's not actually staying out there, he's just showing a few survival tips. Most of it is complete nonsense solely done for entertainment, but what do you expect from the Discovery Channel?

Les Stroud is a very cool guy, that much is obvious, but he really only seems to be an expert in certain habitats. He was utterly clueless in the Costa Rican jungle which is completely full of food. He managed to catch 1 lizard. I dare say an actual expert in jungle survival would have fared far better (obviously). Survivorman is the better show because it's realistic. If I was stuck in the jungle I'd be miserable as hell too.

Yeah, ok, so you can survive in the mountains(catching salmon), the open ocean(catching a bird of whatever the kiss he did in that episode), tropical islands(and make a kissing crab & clam stew), estuaries and deserts (caught packrats with awesome traps made from rocks), but can you survive in a jungle? Yeah, ok so... you can but you only caught 1 lizard, faggot!

He didn't survive! He said he couldn't take it in there anymore and walked back to the beach. He endures more than he survives. I've only watched episodes in series 1 so far. I dare say he gets better at it in later series.

eye mmmm ohhh bear grylls would do significantly worse if he had to actually survive instead of eat random buttholes and go back to his jacuzzi is all im sayin

add him filming the entire show HIMSELF and writing all the kissing music and its like looking at some reality tv show hosted by a dude with a zany vs the best show ever made

Bear would be fine in some environments, but clueless in others. Part of SAS training is getting abandoned in remote places and surviving.

Very cool pad he has there. You can tell he was recently divorced! I bet he installed the paintball arena just after his wife left him.

By the way, Les drinks his own piss in the Kalahari desert episode in series 2. You should probably actually watch the show before holding it up as a shining example. (I really like the show too)

We should all buy Survivorman a night in this hotel to help him relax:
