I am almost certain that in 2002 and 2006 I made soccer world cup threads on these very boards.

So why break tradition?

-Perhaps because only myself and maybe 1 or 2 other people here are actually interested in the world cup?

A good reason, and one I am willing to ignore.

Some of you may know there is a little bit of added spice this year as Englands first game coincides amazingly with the USA's.

It's even at the same venue.

Wouldn't it be great if the yanks beat us at our very own sport? A sport that is massive over here, a sport that is played everyday by every boy in this country.

I would find it so great I would probably scream with happy rage.

Personally I love the world cup and how I could walk into a bar anywhere in the world right now and people would be talking about it.

I'm going to try to engage myself in it as much as time permits.

It's just hard to dive into something like this without much history or knowledge of the players and stories etc.

If the US beats England I think it'll overtake some of the news about ocean sludge, Helen Thomas' conversion to naziism and the Tea Party taking over 0.04% of our government with some feel-good news. I could go for that.

otherwise the games are just about equally pointless, and should only be played or enjoyed by children.

Yeah soccer doesn't fit in with the US advertising schedules very well. You need at least two dozen breaks in the game to sell beer, shitty fast food and trucks.

As far as non-soccer fans latching onto the game, I think the World Cup lost a lot of credibility when it was in the US and the championship game ended in a 0-0 tie then a penalty kick (which looks ridiculous with all those guys holding their cocks and grimacing), then the guy kicking the penalty booted the ball about six feet above the net.

Hey now come on chaps. I am very open minded when it comes to sport (as some of you well know) even joining you in Fantasy Football every year, so why not tune in now and then to catch a completely random fixture? There are a few spicy looking fixtures.

England v Algeria. Everytime we play a north African team there seens to be trouble.

Germany v Serbia. My Serbian ancesters kissing hate Germans. Yes, I am part Serb.

Ivory Coast/Brazil/Portugal v North Korea. What I really want to see is the edited cut of these games that will be shown in N. Korea.

Yes the world cup is boring soccer but it's not the kicking of a ball around that we all love, it's the atmosphere.

Where else would you be able to see a few thousand engineerd North Korea fans next to 20,000 fanatic Brazilians? (next Tuesday, 8.30pm GMT; Brazil v N. Korea)

My pretentious roommates insist on pretending to care about soccer because of the World Cup. It's very annoying, since I have to wake up to them talking about stupid shit before leaving for the bar at noon, and then once I get back to sleep I have to wake up to them yelling about even stupider shit (i.e. soccer) when they get back home.

So kiss soccer. God dammit, why can't you broadcast this sport at night time like reasonable people would do?

We do, 7:30pm kick off for yesterdays game over here.

And it's hosted in South Africa.

Slovenia v Algeria at the moment. Little of note has happened, a game of pretty poor standard but one I am enjoying none the less.

The camera just zoomed in to the top of one of the floodlights at the stadium, which reaches around 50-60 feet in height.
An Algerian fan has climbed to the very top of this floodlight, and is frantically waving his nations flag whilst sitting pretty comfortably on top of a giant bulb.
A large host of security guards have gathered beneath him, completely unsure of what to do.

Got to love the world cup.
