    How to build a town

aka HOLY kiss THAT'S A LOT OF GOLD.

I've already been working on zerging up my woodcutting but if you gusy would let me chop and lumber you collect into wood I would really like that. It looks like we're going to need like 40,000+ gold (not including wood/stone/iron or anything) so I don't know about building our own right now (also, read the bottom part for a long list of negatives about towns). I still want to make rafts and siege stuff and would like to be prepared for when we want a city.

    http://www.mmorpg.com/blogs.cfm?isap...uilding&bhcp=1

The first step to city building is claiming your piece of land. Darkfall supposedly has somewhere around 97 plots of claimable land that come in assorted varieties, such as hamlets and cities. In order to claim a piece of land, you will first need to farm up 10,000 gold for a clanstone. Once you have the stone, you need to take it to an unclaimed piece of land and you will be able to claim it for your guild.

If you are still reeling from that 10,000 gold, then grab your ankles because we are just warming up. Next you will need to scrape up another 5000 gold to purchase the construction skill for one of your guild members. With the construction skill, this guild member will be able to start crafting that basic building blocks that comprise all of the structures on your land. These building blocks are called "modules".
In order to craft a single module, your crafter will need 250 gold, 50 stone, and 20 wood (50 timber). This often times means that your guild will need to do a great deal of harvesting to gather the stone and wood, but also the farming of gold. This means that depending on the size of your guild and the dedication of its members, this can become a very time consuming venture.

The very first building that you are forced to build before anything else can be done is the bank, which costs 10 modules to build. When you do the math with the above numbers, it translates out into 2500 gold, 500 stone, and 200 wood (500 timber). One annoying part about building the bank is the fact that these 10 modules you need weigh a ton, and we found that one of our members really were unable to carry more than 2 modules per person due to encumbrance. This can be a frustrating step if the location of your clan city is far from the nearest bank because you will have to carry these all the way to your towns location. We are fortunate enough to have our city not more than a few minutes from bank access, so 5 of us were able to carry the 10 modules to the building site without any interference from enemy players. Once the bank is built, you can simply pick up all future modules at the city from your bank without transporting them manually.

Now that you have all your modules at the build site, you need to have your city mayor erect the structure. This person can be selected via the guild interface, and does not need to be the same person who has the construction skill. The mayor has access to build menu at the bindstone that puts him in an aerial view with a menu detailing all of the various types of structures types. Each of the buttons opens up a new screen showing the structures relating to that type, although for some reason the palisades (walls) icon looked bugged to me.

    Palisades
These are the basic wall structures that surround your city. If you have ever played Age of Conan, the building of walls is done in a similar fashion. The wall is chopped up into segments which must be built individually. My guild has a hamlet, and in our situation the wall was chopped into 13 segments. The number below each item in the building menu represents the number of modules needed to construct the item, so with each wall costing 1 module, you are looking at 13 modules to complete all walls . Again we can put this into a cost perspective and it comes up to 3250 gold, 650 stone, and 260 wood (650 timber).

The walls themselves are pretty impressive in the fact that they come complete with an inner hallway with ramps leading to a second level. We did not see any option for a gate or door, which has us concerned that the usefulness of the walls themselves in our particular situation could be questionable. Another issue to us is that after building all of the wall segments, there are still several openings. We are hoping that some of the other structures we have not built will fill in these holes, but since we are not that far along I can't say for sure if that will be the case. Also since we own a hamlet, I do not know if these issues also apply to those with cities or other locations. I think we all would like to see a door like Age of Conan's cities had that could only be accessed by the guild and our friends.

    Housing
Housing involves the creation of structures with an interior for your guild to hang out. In addition to the fluff value, adding these structures is supposed to increase the number of people in your guild who are allowed to bind themselves to the guild's bindstone. Initially, only 10 members can bind to the city, but with the addition of housing structures the number goes up by a certain number per building. The bad news is that the number of these buildings you can erect is predetermined to your city type or piece of land. The hamlet seems to allow 2 of these buildings, and they cost 10 modules each (5000 gold for both).

The houses themselves are quite impressive looking, and I can only assume that each race will have a different style to them given the label of the building when you target over it says "Clan House Mahirim". While we haven't built our houses yet, I was able to take a walk into the houses from the Exodus Syndicate guild, which has opted to build the buildings before the walls. The first floor of the clan house was a large room with assorted tables and decorations, and a flight of stairs leading up to second level. The second level is more of a balcony level, and has another flight of stairs leading to a very small 3rd floor area. One final note about houses that I find annoying, is that while inside you are always targeting it, so you have the label with the life bar in the way often as can bee seen in the screenshots.

    Resources
Resources are one of the main reasons players are supposed to want to have a city and control a certain piece of land. Every location seems to have access to one resource that can be built. The game does not tell you what that resource is before you claim your plot of land, but by looking at the general area where your city is, it is usually pretty easy to figure out. For example, if your city is located in a mountainous or cave area, then you would expect there to be a mine. These resources are supposed to act a source to obtaining rare materials that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to get by other means.

Developing these resources into something tangible that can be used by your city is costly. The plot of land Inquisition has at the moment has a farm as its special resource. For us to develop this would cost our guild 50 modules! That's right, 50. That means 12,500 gold in modules alone just for the farm, and this does not even factor in the massive amounts of stone and wood. As much as I was blown away by this, I suddenly felt a lot better when I found out how much Exodus Syndicate's harbor is going to cost them upwards of 250 modules (62,500 gold not counting materials).

    Trade and Extras
Trade seems to be pretty self explanatory. When you click on the structures for this option you are shown a general store with a cost of 10 modules. I can only assume this place a merchant who can sell crafting supplies and hopefully some of the work stations certain crafts require to be used, although I can't confirm this personally.

The extras are the thing that I really don't understand at this point. These consist of various things like barrels, crates, and scaffhold. The good news is that they are relatively inexpensive at only 2 modules each, but at this point I don't really know what purpose they serve. It is possible that they could just be fluff to decorate the town and make it look built up and alive, or there could possibly be some sort of bonus associated with it. At this stage however, nobody is willing to blow modules on these when other things clearly take priority.

    Final Thoughts
I think at this point my biggest concern as a hamlet owner is a lack of defenses or defendability for our plot of land. We have walls that don't seem to encase the perimeter of our property, which sort of defeats the purpose of having a wall if someone can just walk around it. Perhaps the missing buildings will fill in the holes, but the fact remains that even if they do, there does not seem to be a gate. In the event of an attack, enemies would be able to easily enter the property unless there was some sort of door with a friendly switch to set who is allowed to come and go.

Hamlets do not seem to have guard towers either, at least mine doesn't. This only makes it that much easier for unwanted visitors to travel into our land, hell I got ganked while I was taking the screenshots for this article right in the center of my guilds property. There does seem to be some sort of guard tower control for people who are lucky enough to have them, it would be nice is they could do something like that with a door to set access. I have also heard some of the cities have cannons that are not positioned as well as they could be to make them useful. Some people may be put off by the fact that you can't build anywhere you want, or place your buildings where you want. I think the fact that there are a limited number of set locations does increase the value of having one and gives people a reason to fight, and the fact that there is a money sink here is probably a good thing for the game's economy. Having gone back over the article and added up just the gold needed in modules to build our hamlet (not counting the extras), the total comes to around 40,000+ gold, and that isn't counting the stone and wood (or the guilds that have more expensive resources like harbors). This definitely is one of those MMOs where your money is always worth something.
The good thing about the entire concept of city building in this game compared to other MMOs is that there is a real sense of satisfaction when you start putting up structures because it is not instanced. Everyone in the world who comes by your spot will be able to see the work you have done, unlike in AoC where everything was instanced. They definitely have a solid and interesting foundation for their city building system, despite the fact that I think some tweaks would go a long ways. This aspect of the game really adds another layer to the gameplay, and reinforces what I originally said about being in a guild to fully experience all that Darkfall has to offer.

If this doesn't take away all the time you have for responsibilities, I don't know what will

Total of 40,000 gold? I actually don't think its that bad. Here is why. Repeatable Kobold quest! It depends on what starting city you did, some of you know this as Repeatable Troll quest. But the 3 times I did this Kobold quest I made this much gold (including gold drops, selling item drops off mobs, and of course the quest reward itself):

    682 g
560 g (I got grayed out ganked and fulling looted once on this attempt)
    591 g

So only in my wildest dreams could I make less than 500 g per hour doing this sort of quest. This doesn't take into account gold/item bonuses I could get if I used Knockback to pulvarize low health competitors and take their stuff.

So basically that 40k gold would only take 10 active players a total of 8 hours each, or in other words 1 hour a day for a week. But personally I am not going to invest much time into my character other than Skills until I know the full nature of the NA server transfer.

Lucid Visions allied with Lords of Death who own a city on the ice continent.

Since I doubt we're even gonna get a hamlet going, I'd say we allied with them a pitch in to build LoDs city.

    wow what fantastic leadership

"Yeah guys we suck - lets just give all of our farmed stuff to this other guild. They're pretty cool! OK well we sorta have a 1 day alliance with this one guild and they know another guild with the amazing name "Lords of Death"! This plan is sure to be beneficial to FoH!"

    I hope you're kissing joking.

I have yet to even talk to Mangar, LVs guild leader, about this and all I did was have a chat with Kringe who said it might be good for us to ally since we're old RZ guilds and they've been allies with Lords of Death (angsty guild name I know) for several years across many games in the past and they happen to own a large PC city on here.

Do you realize that as of right now hamlets and cities are effectively useless (they're no different than a NPC city), hard to defend and easy to destroy.

IIRC a PC town can have a building destroyed outside of a declared seige seige once per day.

Atm we have 14 ppl on the roster two of which are Rancar(Which I'm sure Rancar 2 is deleted but still there for some reason) who gets DCed every 10minutes unless he worked it out last night -2 ppl = 12.

Then we have Awesine Nailo who I've never seen on since I invited him to the guid, down to 11 people.

So we have 11 people to work with to build a hamlet atm until more get their payment shit worked out (and by the activity on this board, thats only a couple of people),. Grief who was lucky to get a hamlet on the far edge of the world, has around 40+ people to work with.

Judging by the costs in gold and resources we'll be spending our entire play times grinding these resources to build this shit which isn't the reason I and many other FoH came to this game for - we want to be the people who kiss others cities up. Buildings and Walls have almost no HPs when up against a commited seige and if the major complaint now from ppl - it's more trouble defending a town than it is to kiss someone elses up.

BTW Hamlets are just a bank, a farm, a clanstone and a few buildings - they have little to no defences.

This completely ignores the fact that few if any PC towns are left to grab, almost all are owned and run by guilds far stronger than our dozen players.

So if you really want to play the PC town thing guys, all I ask is that you pitch in in doing recon and scout for free clanstones (I doubt there are any, the Beta people were established and knew all the ins and outs of the game while we were still kissing around with our pre-orders.

My idea of an alliance with Lucid Vision and Lords of Death (remember, this is yet to be and they just might laugh us off) is we still get to play the town thing without bearing a burden we can't maintain right now. We can defend the LoD city and join in seiging others. If after a while we decided to do our own thing when we get the numbers, we can always do that.

Does this sound lame? Well the majority of guild do this, there arn't many uber-guilds kicking around, they're alliances between many guilds that help out doing shit.

Like the city of Gulghat and the Silver Sun Republic, they have (just from what I've seen) an alliance with two other RPs guild harvest an do shit in their city and come to help for mutual protection.

Then we come to FoHs recruitment plan, we have none and I've never managed one before and only been around when it was mass recruit everyone and all that which we all want to avoid in this game.

Darkfall doesn't help in this regard.

Beyond guilds, there's little player to player interaction, I've never seen two guildless people grp together and develop a casual chat and friendship formation that comes with a dungeon crawl and wanting to regrp with someone to do it again tomorrow cause they know how to play their class.

None of that is in this game so the only option looks like spamming Race alliance chat for recruits which I'm against because it'll only bring mostly dregs to the guild.

I went into this game doubting we'd be the kind of guild that could run a settlement and the feedback I'm getting from people over how annoying, stupid, costly and what a massive unrewarding timesink this aspect of the game is gives me the feeling that if we ever do work towards it on our own, we won't be enjoying the game as much as we are right now.

That or we wait until Aventurine expands the city aspect of the game which I have a not so hopful feeling will be many months from if.

So let's work out what kinda guild we wanna be, an us against the world type one, the serious business type one that runs a hamlet/town own our own and take pride in how much of a kissing grind it is, a part of a guild alliance that can do many apsects of the game, or a casual one where we do our own thing but don't expect to do movers and shackers in the world of Darkfall.

I really don't care if we share a town with nerds, but I'm not adding 30 minutes after the queue to fund it, especially when it's so far out of the way that you're better off binding in a major city

Hence why I say kiss the whole town aspect of the game for now, it's more trouble than it's worth.

But you didn't say to kiss the whole town aspect. You said to farm for another guild which is a really bad idea.

Having a town is something we probably can't do right now but that doesn't mean we should farm for another guild. If we do that, as dayse said, we might as well join their guild and have a FoH sect and receive direct benefits.

The only way we're going to be "successful" is to avoid the bluebie grinds and money sinks that envelope this game and find a niche of our own to make money and become powerful. This will probably involve choice PKing/sieging of towns or something else that we will learn later.

I'm totally fine with not having a town of our own, and even sharing someone else's, but I'm not fine with us dumping our resources into someone else's city.

I'm all for that, I was just thinking along the lines that since cities get kissed over pretty fast with Warhulks if we allied we any guild with a city, or even hamlet, it won't be long before they'll start requesting some aid.

Some Uber alliances bearly even put up a fight now defending their cities because it's so stupid now.

Yar I'm willing to defend another guild's town but I don't think I have the willpower to farm shit for them.

And isn't LoD that nerd guild that "raged" a GM by standing next to him? Beastro is right though, we need to ally with SOMEBODY (the Grief people seem pretty cool) if we want to have our "own" town unless we start recruiting a lot more people.

I got zero experience in this and the way DF is set, there's little out of guild grping to form friendships and get to know people enough to consider them worth of joining the guild or they asking if thet could.

Both ways seem fine to me. Rancar ran the EQ2 guild a little bit seriously for my taste, but that was primarily because of the guild leveling mechanics, he was trying to build us into a strong guild, and maybe because he was SZ . On SZ you couldn't just turn on someone that you didn't like, because teams were hardcoded and I think there is a little bit to the old RZ vs. SZ debate, SZ being a little bit more ordered, RZ being a little bit more eff you.

Am I making any sense or am I way off?

So when I joined FoH it was all spamming and gkicking and other guilds telling me that FoH were the scum of the earth. I've found that I like this. The reason is, I'm in a WoW raid guild, have led one, and have raided for a few years now. Even though I enjoy it, it wasn't as much fun as being in a populated FoH.

What I mean to say is, if I want to be helpful I can join any guild in the universe and do that. If I want to be helpful, I can help FoH. But if I want to log in and do whatever I want, terrible terrible things, there are very few guilds that I can do those things in.

So I'm happy with either, as long as I can continue to run amok without anyone telling me I shouldn't. But if I had to pick one way or the other, I enjoy having my guts hated by as many people as possible.

I've never enjoyed raiding, you just end up logging in to raid ever day and are happier logging off to recover from it than you were logging in to play the game.

Though it was fun to have the random inviting and kicking shens, DF can't really handle that well nor could I really stand having that going on being in charge this time.

Besides, why mass invite and kick ppl when we can invite em to the guild and gank their gear with no alignment hits

i think you gusy should start exploiting mobs that drop higher rank weapons and you're set to buy clan shards and steal peoples cities.

you can't even mass invite very well in this game, people have to navigate through the clunky clan page and apply to the guild in order to join, no /guildinvite

That and, as I said before, there's no way to get to know people and interact with them beyond pissing them off.

Our first out of the blue recruit happened today and was a guy that followed us for half and hour RPing and was patient enough to do the recuitment thing.

He basically sought us out instead of us encountering him and thinking "Hey we should invite this guy to the guild".

Sorry I wasn't implying we should be kicking each other. I just mean to say that I tend to enjoy the most anarchal type of FoH more than the hey-lets-be-good-at-the-game type. I think there is plenty of room for both. I'm just giving my preference.

I'd love a city and would like to pursue that, though at this point I see it as almost impossible. Really, though, the only reason I wanted a city is to have a bind point and bank in the same place for when I am red. I think it would probably be pointless if it were out in BFE, but who knows.

Alliances don't worry me one bit other than the threat of Flowers getting absorbed by the ideals of another guild. I think the current path is fine, a few alliances dotted about the map so that our reds can still learn spells (can you do that in a clan-city?), with the understanding that it is a "loose" alliance, and that Flowers will be Flowers. I'm also happy with no alliances at all. Both seem fun.

I'd like to try going permanently red soon. I'm not sure about the logistics of that. Are there trainers and things without towers anywhere?

    Possibly here:

My opinion for our long term plans is we should start deciding on a location to put up a small hamlet when the NA server comes out.

Lets just use other hamlets and NPC cities until the US release, then I say we try for a hamlet somewheres.

Silvertowns good for that, cept the bank and all the vendors are quite a walk from each other and cus there's no guard towers, it's a gankers dream.

Alliances don't worry me one bit other than the threat of Flowers getting absorbed by the ideals of another guild
I dunno about Grief, but LV and LoD are the kiss everyone type cept they don't do it as so light hearted as we do it.

Everything? I only had in mind and basic mats for maintaining a town, stone and wood.

Anyway it's all moot until the NA server comes up when we'll be on even ground with the Beta testers and know what to go for.

So lets treat our time on the Euro server as recon and everyone focus primarally on exploration to scope out the best hamlet to take.

While we may not be able to maintain our own city, why not just claim a neutral town as ours? If we bind somewhere nearby and hang out often in the town, we can kill whomever we want. Plus, they wouldn't be able to destroy anything.

I'd rather us pick a spot on the map, near a bindstone and near a bank of some sort, and make that our land. It's better than giving our resources to another guild hohoho. I just wanna gank with other flowers more than anything. If this means continually grinding rep so that we can use it to gank others near guard towers, then so be it.

I wouldn't mind helping an ally with supplies. That can just be personal choice though instead of guild policy or taking from guild bank. Just make an announcement if they are in need of aid and let people help who want to help. My motivation wouldn't come from being a friendly friendly bastard, but just from the fun of learning about and playing with the city raid system.

btw, that doesn't seem like much gold at all. It's easy to get 1000g in a day, and with multiple people farming we could have that amount rather quickly. In the context of the overall game economy, it costs 20,000g to make a Sunbow which is much smaller than an entire town. Anyone know if the legendary weapons decay? If they do, then 20,000g really isn't that much at all for a new one considering the cost of a town.
