What is the coolest watch you can find?
Before I get your hopes up this watch no longer exists and it was a failure so it probably won't come back.
The bumps raise and lower, allowing you to tell time through touch. In a meeting or conversation you'll know the time without appearing rude. ![]() Here's how it worked: ![]() http://www.worldtempus.com/wt/1/232/ It was either called the "Secret Eye" watch or the "See Touch Watch" depending on the translation. Ok, beat that! |

I am a total watch aficionado. I am obsessed with mechanical watches. The hand made precision that goes into some of these things is incredible. I spend thousands per year collecting classics, but this is the one I yearn for, the Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillon.
Before I show you the most complicated watch ever made, let me describe it's majesty. Regular mechanical wristwatches are only accurate to +-5 seconds a day. Believe it or not this is caused by gravity; as you wear the watch on your wrist the mechanical parts to the left of the face are slightly closer to the center of the earth than those on the right (as you are walking). This slight disturbance is magnified by the extreme precision in the tiny watch parts. In steps an invention of pure genius, the Tourbillon. One of the few things the French have done right, the tourbillon was invented in 1795 to counteract the effects of gravity. In a tourbillon the watch escapement is encased in a rotating frame. As the frame rotates 360 degrees all parts of it get the same pull of gravity and it is this free space rotation that is the heart of this watch. But Patek Philippe took it to the extremes in this mechanical piece of pure wrist sex. This watch has two sides. One with the time, calendar, moon phases etc. About what you would expect. But you turn it over and you have a full map of the sky accurate to the second that is all controlled mechanically. There isn't one microchip in this wonder. It is the most amazing watch ever made. The problem? It's so incredibly hard to make only two are made per year and the waiting list goes to about 2040. That and the million dollar price tag.

Does the face stay still when the frame spins?
Here's another cool one: ![]() It's from a german watchmaker who is obsessed with ball bearings. http://www.otium-uhren.de/ |

Sure, it's kind of embarassing actually. My collection is in Vancouver, but here are some of the ones I've bought over the past two years. These aren't my pictures but the watches are pretty similar. My WW2 era watches are in much better condition than these though.
An Omega Seamaster Professional ![]() A Vostak Russian Kremlin ![]() An Omega WW2 officer's watch from 1945 ![]() A 1957 Bulova ![]() And the current prize of my collection, a Trias Tourbillon. Mine is used though.

I wear all of them. Some of them get worn very rarely, but I bust them all out on occasion.
The Volstok is my current "beater" watch, for everyday use. It's only about $200, so it's not very expensive. Heck some citizen's cost that much. |

I'm not big on gold, but I like the Tourbillon. It's what I'd hope a million dollar watch would look like, classy, useful, but still cool - it has a star chart! I'm sure Rolex makes a million dollar watch, but only because they weigh it down with gaudy diamonds.
